This private kitchen on a secluded beach is run by chef Margaret Xu, who calls her cooking New Hong Kong. A former ad-agency owner who taught herself how to cook, Margaret grows her own organic vegetables and uses old-fashioned tools, such as stone-grinds and terracotta ovens, to create Hong Kong classics with a clean, contemporary twist.

Yin Yang Coastal represents a departure from Margaret’s beloved previous restaurant, housed in a 1930s heritage building in Wan Chai. Here, dinners are catered for groups of up to eight people in a stunning white beach house that can only be accessed by crossing a sandy beach at Ting Kau village. Views from the front terrace, where diners are seated in good weather, across the small bay into glittering Hong Kong, are rivalled only by the food. Margaret prepares a daily menu based on what is ripe in her gardens and what she can fish for herself or buy that morning at the local market. The menu will be a surprise, but if you’re lucky, she will prepare her famous Yellow Earth Chicken, which is roasted in a coal oven to get the crispiest skin imaginable.
